Operations have many obstacles such as delays, schedule changes, high rejects, high overtime, high stocks and low productivity. Another symptom would be the personnel in the company being very occupied and yet productivity is still below expectation. These obstacles may be because processes that made up of the operations are not streamlined or lean. There are many “wasteful” events or activities that led that to low productivity.

The word lean was first coined by a group of researcher from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology when they wrote a book called “The Machine That Changed The World”. It was a study on how Toyota eliminated wastes from its operation. The idea of waste elimination was not a novel idea when Toyota adopted it, but it was perfected by them.

There are generally seven types of wastes; waiting, over production, defects, excess inventory, unnecessary movements, transportation and over processing.
